在1984年到1989年东芬兰大学的库奥皮奥缺血性心脏病危险因素的研究中,对年龄介于42岁和60岁之间没有2型糖尿病迹象的2189名男性的血清游离脂肪酸浓度进行了分析。在接下来的19年里,417名男性被诊断为2型糖尿病。

研究发现,血清中ω-6多不饱和脂肪酸含量高降低了2型糖尿病46%的风险。在分析不同ω-6多不饱和脂肪酸的单独关系时,发现了血清高亚油酸和花生四烯酸含量与2型糖尿病的风险降低之间的相似重大关系。然而,血清中γ-亚麻酸和2-γ-亚麻酸含量高会增加2型糖尿病风险。

这项研究表明,高血清亚油酸和花生四烯酸的浓度降低2型糖尿病的风险。人的饮食决定了血清中的亚油酸含量,亚油酸的主要来源是植物油、坚果和种子。花生四烯酸存在于肉类和鸡蛋,但是,人体也可以利用亚油酸合成花生四烯酸。

γ-亚麻酸和2-γ-亚麻酸在人体内主要由亚油酸合成。相比于亚油酸,它们的浓度在血清中是非常低的。γ-亚麻酸和2-γ-亚麻酸与2型糖尿病风险高的关系在一些早期的研究中已经观察到,但根本原因仍然不知道。

然而,总的来说,这项研究结果以及早期一些研究证明多不饱和ω-6脂肪酸对2型糖尿病风险有有益影响。
