该研究回顾性分析了1980年3月至2010年9月，33例继发性甲状旁腺功能亢进伴高钙血症行纵隔甲状旁腺切除术患者的临床资料。其中以原发性甲状旁腺功能亢进症为主要诊断32例。23例患者术前予以锝-甲氧基异丁基异腈扫描定位。进行微创切除术18例，15例接受了开放性手术。9例患者采用最常见的微创手术方法是电视胸腔镜，11例患者采用最常见的开放性手术方法是胸骨正中切口。22例患者术中进行甲状旁腺激素的监测。异位腺体15例患者位于胸腺内，位于肺动脉窗7例，其余的11例位于胸腔其他部位。

研究结果，确诊为甲状旁腺瘤21例，甲状旁腺增生9例和甲状旁腺癌。各组无早期死亡。微创手术组1例因为血胸需要再次手术。术后出现并发症8例，4例发生最常见的低钙血症。平均住院微创手术组明显较短（2VS6天，P<0.001），但两组之间发病率和死亡率差异无统计学意义（P=0.05）。平均随访时间为3±3.7年。

该研究发现，微创纵隔甲状旁腺切除术与开放手术相比结果相似，住院时间明显较短。
