在这项研究中，研究人员采用原卟啉IX（PpIX）进行aPDT 治疗，PpIX是牙龈卟啉单胞菌细胞内的色素，无需外部光敏剂。结果证实，蓝光照射PpIX可产生单线态氧，具有强度依赖性。研究人员发现，蓝光照射或可杀灭牙龈卟啉单胞菌，杀菌机制似乎是细菌细胞内DNA氧化损伤。

虽然使用aPDT 治疗治疗并不会产生耐药菌，但是传统的方法仍然依赖于额外的光敏染料。在牙龈卟啉单胞菌细胞内，PpIX是用于能源生产，所以借助于PpIX的aPDT 杀灭牙龈卟啉单胞菌避免了耐药菌的出现。该方法不仅具有成为治疗牙周病的新方法的潜力，而且为多种耐药菌的治疗提供了潜在的治疗方法。
