澳大利亚悉尼大学的研究人员表示，上述大脑缺陷可以解释为什么精神分裂症患在达成现实目标、结交朋友、完成学业及寻找工作方面有困难。

研究领导者理查德·莫里斯（Richard Morris）指出，精神分裂症患者缺乏明显动力不是由于缺乏目标或对乐趣及奖励不关心，他们和所有人一样喜欢电影、友谊、美食和美景。然而，大脑的缺陷似乎阻止了他们采取适当的行为及进行必要的选择，从而阻碍其实现自己的目标及愿望。

报道指出，研究人员利用磁共振成像技术观察了研究参与者的大脑活动。他们发现，精神分裂症患者有感受及欲望，但他们很难选择恰当的行动来实现自己的目标。莫里斯表示，不能将愿望和行动融合导致精神分裂症患者身处困境、想要过正常生活却不能采取必要措施来实现。
