在欧洲癌症与营养前瞻性调查(EPIC)-波茨坦研究(potsdam study)中设计了一项病例队列研究，包括26437名可提供血样的参与者。随机选择了一个2500人的亚队列(2029人基线无糖尿病，并有回顾、人体测量和代谢数据进行分析)。在长达7年的随访中，整个队列中确定的820例糖尿病病例中，有698例经过类似排除后仍需分析。

在对年龄、潜在生活方式混杂因素、教育和腰围进行校正后，较高的身高与较低的糖尿病风险相关(男性每10厘米HR为0.59 [95% CI 0.47, 0.75]，女性为0.67[0.51,0.88])。在男性和女性中，腿的长度与较低的风险相关，但仅在男性中，如果根据总身高进行调整。校正肝脂肪和三酰基甘油，脂联素和c反应蛋白大大可使身高和糖尿病风险之间的联系降低，特别是在女性中。

本研究观察到身高和患2型糖尿病风险之间的负相关关系，这在很大程度上与男性的腿长有关。相反的联系可能部分是由较低的肝脂肪含量和更有利的心脏代谢谱所引起的。
