大多数在新生儿重症监护病房的病患都是早产儿，他们经常会患呼吸道疾病。重要的是需要知道他们疾病感染的原因。生物体液的组成成分非常复杂。研究人员使用高性能的质谱分析，通过测量它们的质量来鉴别目标液体中的蛋白质，通过质谱分析测量峰值强度来确定蛋白质浓度。再仔细地进行生物信息学数据的处理。最终他们挑出了36种蛋白质，表明呼吸道疾病是感染性的(先天性肺炎)还是非感染性的(呼吸急促、婴儿呼吸窘迫综合征)。

“在我们的初步研究中，我们成功地定义了核心尿蛋白质组和婴儿特定蛋白质以及病理条件。在用非侵入性尿生物标记的识别诊断新生儿呼吸状况方面我们是领军人物。研究结果是非常乐观的，这将是发展新生儿监测条件的一个平台。”离子和分子物理实验室的负责人Evgeny Nikolaev教授说。

之前科学家发表了一篇有关通过孕妇尿液样本来诊断孕妇疾病的论文。研究人员现在提出了一个类似的非侵入性方法来监测早产新生儿的发育状况。
