科学家们观察到,当它们增加目前用于显现动脉(动脉粥样硬化斑块)中发现的脂肪积累的光的波长时,它们可以选择性地鉴定通常导致血块,心脏病发作和中风的破裂倾向的沉积物。

虽然一些脂肪沉积物或斑块可以保持多年稳定,但其他高风险病例会发生并发症,例如出血斑块,导致脂肪斑块的裂缝和破裂的形成。这可能导致血管阻塞,导致心脏病发作或中风。目前的成像技术能够识别高风险斑块的某些特征,但没有一个被普遍接受为选择性检测危险斑块的可靠方法。

来自WMG国际纳米复合材料制造研究所的Tara Schiller博士以及贝克与蒙纳士大学的同事们也发现,目前用于检测动脉脂肪沉积物积累的红外(IR)辐射波长增加近红外(NIR)波长允许他们选择性地识别具有内部出血的斑块,通常与高风险沉积物相关。

使用拉曼光谱法鉴定引起该荧光的产物。它们被认为是红细胞降解过程中形成的血红素产物的混合物。这些产品仅在内部出血不稳定的斑块中观察到,在更稳定的脂肪沉积物中未观察到。这可以在寻找患者的高风险时提高选择性,并可帮助医生确定最危险的患者。

Karlheinz Peter博士解释说:“尽管每年花费数百万美元,特别是心脏成像,但仍然没有确定这些不稳定斑块的可靠方法。

“我们意识到,当我们在近红外波长范围内照射光时,这种光被以一定的波长反射,所以在某种程度上,我们可以使用激光照射不稳定的斑块”彼得博士继续说。

经过对临床试验的进一步研究,这种成像技术的方法可用于评估不稳定的脂肪动脉斑块,可用于监测用于预防心脏病发作或中风的药物的有效性。

Nature Communications公司发表的研究报告是“intraplaque出血和血红素降解作为高风险动脉粥样硬化斑块标记物引起的近红外自发荧光”。
